Spherical single lenses made of zinc selen (ZnSe, or zinc selenide), the most commonly used optical material that transmits infrared light.
In contrast to other optical materials for infrared wavelengths such as Ge (germanium) or Si (silicon), ZnSe lenses transmit some visible light, facilitating optical axis adjustment (alignment) of infrared laser systems and permitting use of cheaper He-Ne lasers.
These lenses intended for use with CO2 lasers have AR coatings.

NOTES! |
High-power lasers often emit laser light in the infrared region. Such systems require careful handling, since infrared laser light is invisible. Since the laser light is invisible, preliminary alignment of optical parts is in many cases essential. Use of zinc selen, which transmits some light in the visible spectrum, allows easier alignment of optical components. |
Despite its remarkable internal transmittance, ZnSe has a high refractive index, resulting in surface reflection losses of approximately 30% and lower overall transmittance. ZnSe products require antireflection coatings. |
ZnSe reacts readily with acidic substances to generate toxic selenium dioxide gas. Never use acidic substances to wash ZnSe materials. |
ZnSe is not a naturally occurring substance. High-quality optical parts can be produced by chemical vapor-phase deposition (CVD). |
The surface flatness is the reflected wavefront distortion of the surface befor coating. |
Be sure to wear laser safety goggles when checking optical path and adjusting optical axis. |
