Zinc Sulphide Multispectral (ZnS)

ZnS Multispectral (water-clear) is used for IR windows and lenses in the thermal band (8 to 14 μm) where maximum transmission and lowest absorption is required. Also selected for use where visible alignment is an advantage.

Special properties of ZnS-----------------------------------

Due to its good transmission in the VIS and IR,Cleartran is an ideal choice for systems with a visible cameras, and and various IR detectors or IR cameras.

cameras is about one-third harder than ZnSe.

cameras is about two-thirds the hardness of ZnS reguler.

The relative price of Cleartran is about one third more than Zns reguler.

The relative price of Cleartran is about the same as ZnSe.

The relative price of Cleartran is generally more than Ge.

Cleartran is diamond turnable.

Typeical application:Visible imaging, thermal imaging,FLIR, astronomy

Products manufactured:Lenses, aspheric lenses ,binary(diffractive) lenses, windows, beamsplitters and optical filters and prisms

Surface finish:Typical specifications for surface quality are 40-20 scratch-dig in the 0.4 to 3 um spectral region and 60-40 or 80-50 scratch-dig in the 3 to 12 um spectral region.Demond-turned surface roughness of 100 A rms or better is typtical.

Surface figure:In the VIS and NIR spectral regions, specified surface figure ranges from 1/10 ti 1/2 to 2 waves @ 0.6328um.

AR coating options:Typical available coatings including BBAR for the 0.8 to 2.5,3 to 5 and 8 to 12 μm bands. Other specialized bands are possible from 0.4 to 12 μm.

Product Notes:------------ --------------------------------------

Zinc Sulphide is produced by synthesis from Zinc vapour and H2S gas, forming as sheets on Graphite susceptors. Zinc Sulphide is microcrystalline in structure, the grain size being controlled to produce maximum strength. Multispectral grade is then Hot Isostatically Pressed (HIP) to improve the mid IR transmission and produce the visibly clear form. Single crystal ZnS is available, but is not common.

Zinc Sulphide oxidizes significantly at 300°C, exhibits plastic deformation at about 500°C and dissociates about 700°C. For safety, Zinc Sulphide windows should not be used above 250°C in normal atmosphere.
